This space bears the name of two prominent scientists — Hugh and Stanley Rockwell. Incidentally, they were not directly related, but together they authored the Rockwell hardness test, a most useful non-destructive method.
It relies on the measurement of the depth of penetration of an indenter on the material being tested, making it possible to calculate its relative hardness on a common scale.
Thanks to its simplicity and relative quickness, as well as high reproducibility, the Rockwell technique has become one of the most popular hardness tests. The method proposed by Hugh and Stanley Rockwell eliminated the errors from the mechanical imperfections of the measurement system.
