Obukhov Conference Room is named after the engineer and steelmaker who discovered a technique for the production of high-quality steel.
Pavel Obukhov began experimenting with cast steel production in the Urals in 1848. After nine years, he was granted an exclusive privilege to mass-produce high-quality crucible steel with his process. The differentiating feature of the process “was the use of iron ore that ensured a constant composition from different source materials in terms of carbon content”. Having been tested successfully, Obukhov’s steel was deemed fit for making gun barrels.
