THE PHILOSOPHER OF NATURE
Known as a ‘true universalist’, a genius, a man ahead of his times, Mikhail Lomonosov made a major contribution to the development of the Russian language, culture and science. A true erudite, he was a chemist, physicist, astronomer, engineer, geographer, geologist, and steelmaker.
When it comes to his research in metallurgy, Lomonosov was convinced that, while Russia was bestowed with all kinds of ores, it does not produce enough metals because “there are no people to make use of these riches.” His insightful treatise First Principles of Metallurgy or Mining laid the foundation of Russian geology. Therein Mikhail Lomonosov described the ores of main metals, the features of corresponding deposits, the approaches to surveying and downstream operations.
