His first large contribution had to do with complex platinum compounds. He also did a lot in the chemical investigation of saline and water-saline systems, as well as metallic systems and alloys. Kurnakov participated in the discovery and development of potassium deposits, surveying and development of the Garabogazköl Basin, the saline lakes of Crimea and the Ural-Emba District. Together with his students, he advanced the knowledge of the physicochemical characteristics of metallic alloys. This research enabled the creation of a wide range of alloys: light, hard, heat resistant, and others — that are now widely used as structural materials and other components in various technical applications.
