Hertz Hall

This large hall is named after one of the founding fathers of electrodynamics Heinrich Hertz (1857-1894).


On 13 November 1886, Hertz successfully detected waves between a radio transmitter and receiver. His further experiments allowed him to measure their velocity, reflection, refraction, and even polarization. Hertz thus corroborated the theory that the velocity of radio wave propagation is equal to the speed of light and that the energy of electric and magnetic fields can be transmitted wirelessly. His experiments used many instruments that anticipated future basic radio stations. In 1888, the scientist published a fundamental treatise On Electromagnetic Waves in Air and Their Reflection.In 1930 a new unit was named in his honour as Hertz. It was accepted as the international standard in 1933. 1 Hertz is one electric fluctuation per second.
