Ivan Bardin started out as a rank-and-file labourer, working 12-14 shifts at an American factory to acquire experience at a large facility. He went on to become a world-renowned researcher and the inventor of the breakthrough continuous casting technology. In the 1930s, Bardin’s leadership was instrumental in the construction of the Union’s industrial behemoth — Kuznetsk Iron and Steel Plant (renamed Novokuznetsk), and in the establishment of the  Metallurgy Institute under the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1939. Bardin’s efforts were recognized with seven Orders of Lenin. He was a laureate of two Stalin Awards and the Lenin Award.
