Badaev Conference Room is named in honour of the Russian metallurgist, inventor, creator of an original technique for the production of high-quality instrument steel Semen Badaev (1778-1847).

Badaev was born in the village of Verkhi, Orel Region, into a family of a peasant serf. He began experimenting with making high-strength steel in 1808 at the Surgical Instruments Factory in Saint Petersburg. He proposed to use a combination furnace with a hardening and a crucible unit. First results were achieved in 1810, and instrumental and stamped steels made with this technique came to be known as Badaev steel. He went on to work at the Kamskoe-Votkinsk Iron Works where a specialized industrial laboratory was set up. He dedicated his entire life to cast steel, investigation of its behaviour during production and processing.
