Chernov established that as temperature is changed steel properties are altered and it undergoes polymorphic transformations. Identified by hot steel colour, the critical temperatures were plotted on a chart where Chernov calculated key points that are still known as Chernov’s points. In 1879, he published a monograph Studies Relating to the Structure of Cast Steel Ingots, which described the main crystalline structures and their effects on steel properties. One type of crystals, dendrite, was also named in the scientist’s honour.
